ebenezer (2020)

then samuel took a stone and set it up between mizpah and shen and called its name ebenezer; for he said, “till now the lord has helped us.”

1 samuel 7:12 (esv)

as i was taking photos of my neighborhood, i quickly realized that i was drawn to vertical structures and singularities. i began thinking of them as bridges between land and sky. whether by nature or artifacts, the tendency for man and earth to draw to the heavens appeared inevitable, and i began wondering: are these structures we build towers of babel, where we in our own power and might reach toward heaven, or are they ebenezers, where we remember that the lord is our help. the distinction may determine not only our spiritual relationships, but also our physical and earthly practices of stewardship and worship.
